Resources for Educators

my529 – an introduction

A 529 plan is a tax-advantaged educational savings plan designed to encourage saving for a beneficiary’s future qualified education expenses, including K-12 tuition expenses (up to certain limits).

my529 is a 529 plan established by the State of Utah in 1996. my529 is Utah’s official and only 529 plan.

Account owners can be anyone who is at least 18 years old and possesses a valid Social Security or Taxpayer Identification Number. You do not have to be a Utah resident to open an account on behalf of a beneficiary.

my529 has been helping families save for college for over 25 years.

Saving at every step

This chart represents an example of the possibility of growth where $40 a month is contributed beginning when a student is in kindergarten and ending around 12th grade, the year they graduate from high school.

No matter when you start saving, there are many points along the way where regular savings have the potential to make a difference.

All numbers are my529 estimates. Earnings on a my529 account assume a contribution of $40 per month at account opening and a 5% rate of return compounded annually over 13 years.
