Electronic payments
Take advantage of my529’s direct-to-school payment service.
This back-to-school task just got easier. my529 has introduced a secure electronic payment service that allows account owners to directly send a withdrawal to participating colleges and universities.
The direct-to-school service can be used to pay qualified education expenses like tuition, fees or on-campus room and board, with funds arriving at the school in approximately just two to three business days.

Why choose direct-to-school payments?
With our e-payment system, transferring funds from your my529 account to participating colleges and universities is easier than ever.
- It’s trackable. Account owners can check the payment status from their my529 account, making it possible to see when their student’s institution has posted the funds.
- It’s fast. Direct-to-school payments only take around two or three business days to arrive at their destination — compared to mailed-in payments, which can take weeks or more.
- It’s convenient. Rather than a check, direct e-payment is a low-stress payment method that’s currently accepted by more than 600 colleges and universities.

Which schools accept electronic payments?
Participating colleges and universities are eligible to receive electronic payments. The service connects with more than 600 eligible educational institutions.
Most of the schools where my529 has previously sent checks can receive electronic payments. If your school participates, you will be able to select it within the search feature when you are logged into your my529 account.
K-12 schools are not eligible.
A small price for peace of mind
The functionality costs $3.50 per transaction. The service fee will be added to the withdrawal amount and deducted from your my529 account.
Account owners must request a withdrawal themselves within their online account. Advisors cannot make direct-to-school withdrawals. This process cannot be completed via paper form.
Using the electronic payment service
When making a withdrawal in your online account, choose “Higher Education” as the type of withdrawal. Then follow the prompts to select the participating college or university where you would like to send your electronic payment.
