Celebrate education across generations with Family History Month

Thanks to efforts by Senator Orrin Hatch in 2002, October is National Family History Month. At my529 we want to encourage your family to celebrate their academic opportunities and achievements — past, present and future!

  • Grandparents — Discuss with your children what educational opportunities their great-grandparents and grandparents had available to them and how they may be different from the opportunities children have today. Any switchboard operators, telegraphists or ice cutters in your past?
  • Parents — Share stories about your educational experiences and classroom memories. What academic accomplishments are you most proud of?
  • Children — Encourage children in your life to write their own future story and remind them that they have many opportunities to choose from. What educational “firsts” will they achieve? How will future generations think about and admire their achievements? Encourage them to envision the cool adults they will become and how education can help them accomplish those goals. Remind them that one day others will look up to their accomplishments just as they are looking up to their parents and grandparents today.
  • Future generations — Consider how saving now for your child’s future education could offer benefits for many generations. Investments in avoiding student loans can help your children have the financial freedom to do the same one day for their children. Those children and grandchildren will be grateful for the efforts you made to help kick-start their futures and encourage a legacy of education in your family.

This is also the season of Dia de los Muertos, a celebration of our departed family and friends through the sharing of fond and fun memories. Children love hearing stories from relatives about when they were children, which can help strengthen inter-generational bonds. They might also be more likely to remember family history if it is wrapped in a fun tale from the past. Bonus points if you catch any of the stories on video to be enjoyed for years to come!
