Changes ahead for Customized underlying fund

Coming in March, my529 will no longer offer the my529 International Value
single-fund portfolio in the Customized investment options. The my529 portfolio corresponds to the Vanguard underlying fund listed next to it in the table below.

Assets will be mapped automatically on a 1:1 dollar basis to the my529 International Value Factor portfolio that features a Dimensional Fund Advisors (DFA) fund.

my529 will notify account owners that hold a UTVJX allocation 30 days prior to the transition. No action is required by account owners.

Will the transition count as an investment option change?

No. However, any alterations you make to your allocations prior to or after the transition will be considered an investment option change.

The Internal Revenue Code allows you to change your investment option twice during a calendar year. If you want to adjust your Customized allocations, you may do so in your online account.

Why is the change happening?

my529 monitors underlying funds on an ongoing basis. After extensive analysis, my529 determined to transition the fund based on several factors, including:

  • UTDIX, corresponding to the DFA fund, has demonstrated better investment performance over short- and longer-term time periods.
  • The my529 International Value Factor portfolio (UTDIX) has an underlying fund expense of 0.28%, which is 28% lower than the my529 International Value portfolio (UTVJX) expense of 0.39%.
  • UTVJX is the least used underlying fund of all 30 my529 customized investment offerings.
