How to open an account

Gather basic information to speed up the process

Account owner

  • U.S. Social Security or Taxpayer Identification Number
  • Date of birth (must be age 18 or older)
  • Mailing address
  • Physical address
  • (Optional) Your bank routing and bank account numbers for automated electronic contributions
  • (Optional) U.S. Social Security or Taxpayer Identification Number and date of birth of any successor account owners you may designate


  • Designate a beneficiary for whom the account is being opened and whose qualified higher education expenses will be paid from the account. (The beneficiary can be anyone, including the account owner.)

Choose your investment strategy

my529 offers a variety of investment options — 12 Enrollment Date options, 10 Static options, and two Customized options. They include funds managed by The Vanguard Group, Dimensional Fund Advisors, Pacific Investment Management Company (PIMCO), and FDIC-insured accounts held by Sallie Mae Bank and U.S. Bank.

You decide how aggressive you want to be with your investment based on your goals and how much time you have to save.

The Internal Revenue Service allows two investment option changes per calendar year for each beneficiary.
